TRANSMISSION FLUID
Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is used in vehicles with self-shifting transmissions. The fluid is typically red or green in colour to distinguish it from other fluids in the vehicle. ATF is a highly specialized oil optimized for the special requirements of a transmission, such as valve operation, brake band friction, torque conversion and gear lubrication. ATF is also used as a hydraulic fluid in some power-assisted steering systems, a lubricant in some 4WD transfer cases, as well as in the manual transmissions of many modern front-wheel drive cars.
